Love in times of Pride and Prejudice

I’ve always heard about "Pride and Prejudice", the TV series, the movie, and the book. I've never took much interest in it until this past week. At class, we saw the 1st chapter of the TV series made in 1995, starred by a quite young Colin Firth. Later that week, I decided to see it entirely and loved it.

N°10 Ten minute play

Thoughts:
The first day we worked in creating our play, we knew it had to be funny. Or at least try to. And what's better than a "based on a true story" play?
We all gave our stories into a brainstorm and chose the ones we could actually perform. Not without laughing in the meantime about someone else’s story. That day we could make half of the play with four characters. Later, we decided to reduce it to three.
After a couple of days of work to make the final touches, the play was done and printed. We discussed how to make our “special effects” and rehearsal a few times.
This is our play.

"Debabelizing minds beyond language" - Day 1

This year I had the chance for the second time to be a part of the 2012 Translation and Interpretation Students Congress celebrated at INACAP Apoquindo on October 25th and 26th.

Gertrudis Payàs at
Debabelizing Minds Beyond Language
INACAP Apoquindo
After the welcoming speeches, the first exposition on day one started. It was someone we already knew from last year. Gertrudis Payàs and her investigation about the Linguistic of Translation. Payàs is a PhD in Translation Studies from Ottawa University. Today, she is a teacher and a researcher at Universidad Católica de Temuco. She was firm about that language caused differentiation and social exclusion, whether for better or worse. Payàs insisted that we must prevent languages from disappearing. We have to keep our identity, translate and keep our language alive, not a mix with the invasive English.

N°9 The wearable towel infomercial

Alongside with Irene, we put on the words for this infomercial at class.

Seeing only the video with no audio made it somehow difficult, but we could manage to get it a little bit as the real one.

Here was our result. Hope you like it!

N°8 Face of Melinda - Opeth

Face of Melinda - Opeth

Meaning:

He sees a lady with black hair and sad looks. He falls in love immediately with her. He tries but, he fails in his aim of capturing her heart. Instead, she chooses another love. That love is God, religion. He feels she cheated on him with God as represented in this line: "A harlot of God upon the earth". Either way, he makes plans to win her back. He asks her to choose him. She explains him her excuses. Her vows are already made. But, in the end, she slips that her heart is still his: "My promise is made but my heart is thine."

EAT

Taken by soleado

A delayed flight was my push to take a look at the souvenir shop and look for a book to read while waiting.

A book is something so uncommon these days. People stared, really. Even more when they noticed it was in English. I laughed inside. I felt smart. I could actually feel some bitterness in the air. Yes, people! Reading a book! Nothing to see here! What if they saw me with my lovely 35mm film camera?

N°7 The Little Girl and the Wolf

The Little Girl and the Wolf

by James Thurber

Taken by ikarlee
One afternoon a big wolf waited in a dark forest for a little girl to come along carrying a basket of food to her grandmother. Finally a little girl did come along and she was carrying a basket of food. "Are you carrying that basket to your grandmother?" asked the wolf. The little girl said yes, she was. So the wolf asked her where her grandmother lived and the little girl told him and he disappeared into the wood.

N°4 Report

Report

Silent volcano
A report by Enzo Calquín

A girl's life gets affected by a volcanic eruption. The eruption erased many houses which were built with effort and work of several families, including the one of a young girl who just bought a new house with a huge loan. A lifetime going to trash while the lava burnt all the houses nearby.

First of all, I wanted to know what happened to this little girl. Her answer was shocking. Her house, her car and everything that she had, was burned by the lava. She was alive, scared and exhausted by this incident. She could contact her family and they were in good conditions. They were going to a shelter thanks to the rescue team who had managed to save them in time. When I asked her about the rescue team, I knew that her situation in that moment was quite hopeless.

Can you tell me what happened?
My house was completely burned by the lava. I saw my neighbours running so I started to run too, that’s what saved me. So here I am, alive but scared. I lost everything, my new house, my car!

How are you right now? Do you know if your family is fine?
Actually, I'm fine but a little exhausted. All happened too fast! My family is OK. I could not communicate very well with them but, they texted me and they are in good condition. They wrote me they were going to a shelter with the rescue team who had picked them up in their house.

N°2 The umbrella man - Character descriptions

Character descriptions

Taken by grad
The mother in The umbrella man was a very distrustful and suspicious woman. She represents a very cold person but, in the end, she has a good heart once she feels confident and trusts again. She is middle aged. Tall. British. Determined.

The daughter is totally opposite to her mother. Mainly, she is very trusting. She is kind with strangers, maybe even naive. Also she seems curious once she feels a little suspicious about something, in this case, about the old man. She is tall as her mother. British.

N°1 The umbrella man - continuation of the story

The umbrella man - continuation of the story:

Taken by scootiepye
Poor old man, and my mother took absolute advantage of him. What was she thinking? It was just a pound. At least we are not getting wetter here in the rain thanks to this silk umbrella. “Mum, are we getting a taxi now?” My mother stood there, looking at me, not saying a word for a long period of time. She must have been thinking really hard. At last, she opened her lips, “maybe we should do something different today? Don’t you think so?”

My mother was acting strangely. Something different? She loved routine and hated the unexpected. ‘No surprises!’ she always says. Going to a cafe was something we always did after a medical appointment. It was like a treat for us. “Mustn't we get home, mum?”
